Appears 11 times in the Quran.

  1. Allah does not call you to account for what is vain in your oaths, but He will call you to account for what your hearts have earned, and Allah is Forgiving, Forbearing.

  2. Allah does not call you to account for what is vain in your oaths, but He calls you to account for the making of deliberate oaths; so its expiation is the feeding of ten poor men out of the middling (food) you feed your families with, or their clothing, or the freeing of a neck; but whosoever cannot find (means) then fasting for three days; this is the expiation of your oaths when you swear; and guard your oaths. Thus does Allah make clear to you His communications, that you may be Fateful.

  3. They shall not hear therein any vain discourse, but only: Peace, and they shall have their sustenance therein morning and evening.

  4. And who keep aloof from what is vain,

  5. And they who do not bear witness to what is false, and when they pass by what is vain, they pass by nobly.

  6. And when they hear idle talk they turn aside from it and say: We shall have our deeds and you shall have your deeds; peace be on you, we do not desire the ignorant.

  7. And those who disbelieve say: Do not listen to this Quran and make noise therein, perhaps you may overcome.

  8. They shall pass therein from one to another a cup wherein there shall be nothing vain nor any sin.

  9. They shall not hear therein vain or sinful discourse,

  10. They shall not hear therein any vain words nor lying.

  11. Wherein you shall not hear vain talk.
